Which Contraception Is Right for Me?
Birth control is a personal choice — and it’s an important one, too. From the pill to long-acting contraceptives like the intrauterine device (IUD), learn about your options and get help making the best decision for your needs and preferences.

Choosing the right contraception is an important decision. It allows you to take control of your reproductive health and decide if and when you want to get pregnant — and these days, you have plenty of options.

At South Valley Women's Health Care, we’re here to help. We offer a variety of contraceptives for women of all ages, and we partner with you to consider factors like effectiveness, convenience, and personal preferences when you’re making your choice.

Here’s an overview of the popular birth control options and how a contraception consultation can help you make the right choice for your needs.

Hormonal contraceptives

Oral contraceptive pills are the most common type of birth control. Nicknamed “the pill,” this option is convenient, reversible, and 99% effective when used correctly.

Birth control pills contain hormones (typically estrogen and progestin) that prevent ovulation and thicken cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. If you choose birth control pills, it’s important to take the pill every day at the same time for maximum efficacy.

Other hormonal options we offer are contraceptive skin patches, vaginal rings, and injections. They work by releasing hormones to prevent ovulation like the pill, but they don’t require daily administration. For example, you replace the skin patch once a week, the birth control ring every four weeks, or get an injection in our office every three months.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)

Long-acting reversible contraception methods, or LARCs, offer the advantage of extended protection with even less frequent administration. Unlike other options, you don’t have to remember to take a pill every day or change a skin patch weekly.

Options include intrauterine devices (IUDs) and arm implants. IUDs, for example, are small T-shaped devices we insert into your uterus. Depending on the type you get, an IUD can protect you from conceiving for up to 10 years. Arm implants can offer continuous protection for up to three years.

These options are highly effective and hassle-free — and if you decide you want to get pregnant, they’re easily reversible, too.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods include condoms, cervical caps, and diaphragms. Each of these create a physical barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. Barrier methods offer immediate protection and can be used on an as-needed basis, but you need to use these methods correctly every time you have sex for them to be effective.
